Mercedes tapped her foot incessantly in the hallway, looking around at the twenty plus other girls there to audition. Singing back-up for Jessica Prince hadn’t been her original intent when she moved to LA, but the blonde songstress was one of the biggest up and coming pop stars of their generation and this could be a huge stepping stone for her career.
They were auditioning girls one by one and she wasn’t sure if Ain’t No Way was a good choice of song, considering the singer was a pop star, but it showcased her voice and she wanted to show what a good asset she could be.
“Mercedes Jones?” the short man with glasses who she assumed to be Jessica Prince’s manager had stepped out again, looking around for her and back at his clipboard.
“Right here!” she said, standing and walking over to him. He nodded and led her into the studio where the starlet and her posse sat, all with snotty judgmental dispositions - but perhaps her nerves just made them seem that way.
“Alright, so step right in the booth, then start when you’re ready,” the man said, taking a seat with the rest of them.
She cleared her throat and took a deep breath before she began singing the song she knew like the back of her hand. Jessica, who’d been checking her nails as if she couldn’t be bothered paused and stared at Mercedes as she sang, her lip twitching. The others were in awe, their mouths either wide open or in a grin.
The last thing Jessica needed was a chubby back-up singer with the ability to upstage her.
