Mercedes smiled feebly when she felt Sam get into bed and snuggle flush against her. His arm wrapped around her middle and he kissed her shoulder, lingering there, taking in her scent and closing his eyes.
“I love you,” he mumbled. Her smile grew and she turned her head slightly to look at him.
“I love you too,” she replied. He kissed her shoulder again and ghosted his fingers over her stomach. His lips trailed up to the shell of her ear and he placed a kiss there as well before speaking again under a whisper.
“Do you…do you wanna try again tonight?” he asked. He heard her sigh.
“I’m beginning to think it doesn’t matter, Sam. We’ve been trying for so long now and honestly I’m just tired of empty hopes and negative pregnancy tests,” she confessed, touching his hand that rested on her middle and twining her fingers with his.
“Are you trying to suffocate the baby?” Sam asked with his arms folded. Mercedes had Stacey’s baby doll face down on her couch as she tried to strap the diaper on.
“Well it kept rolling!” she complained.
“You’re supposed to act like it’s a real baby,” Sam said.
“I regret asking for lessons, because obviously I suck at this,” Mercedes huffed, looking at the sad excuse for a diaper job she’d done on the doll.
“Nah, it just takes practice,” he said, picking up the doll and sitting next to her. “Try it again.”
“I don’t want to try it again. I don’t want kids anymore,” she said. He laughed.
“Yes you do. And it’s okay. When we get married and you give birth, I’ll change the baby’s diaper. At least until you can do it without harming our child,” he told her. She smiled and shook her head.
“I think you just proposed,” she said, her cheeks flushed.
“Yeah, you said when we get married.” It was his turn to blush.
“I mean, sure my family will have to get out of the motel first, then we’d have to go to college, but eventually I’m gonna marry you,” he said. He didn’t see a reason to deny it. She smiled at him and leaned forward, giving him a chaste kiss.
“Okay. I’ll try it again.”
